Provenance metadata, or metadata that describes the origins of the data, is widely regarded as a key ingredient for numerous semantic-web applications. For example, provenance can be essential to align independently designed domain ontologies, to correctly interpret the results of a process execution, and to verify the quality of data. This is witnessed by the activities of the ongoing W3C provenance working group, which aims to define a language for exchanging provenance information among applications, and by the results produced by the W3C provenance incubator group (Sep. 2009 ? Nov. 2010), which collected more than 33 use cases from a variety of domains that have emphatically illustrated the rapidly increasing focus on provenance management in real-world applications. SWPM'12 follows on from two successful editions, co-located with the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC).The SWPM workshop has the following complementary objectives:(1) to explore the opportunities offered by the Semantic Web technologies in the context of the management and exploitation of provenance. (2) to explore the role of provenance in real-world Semantic Web applications.Additionally, we will organize in this edition a panel on PROV-DM, the provenance model that is currently being developed by the W3C provenance working group and which is on the W3C recommendation track. The aim is to discuss and to identify the opportunities PROV-DM presents in leveraging semantic web applications.Workshop FormatSWPM2012 will be a full‐day workshop, with the following format: Research papers: short position papers (up to 6 pages) and full papers (up to 10 pages).A panel to discuss the W3C provenance working group proposals.Demos of prototypes and working systems that collect and/or exploit provenance: 2 pages + demo.Invited talk.TopicsThe workshop solicits the submission of original research papers dealing with analytical, theoretical, and practical aspects of provenance management using Semantic Web.Topics of interest include, but are not restricted to:Use of provenance information in real-world applicationsReasoning with provenance for assessing trustworthiness, reliability, and quality of dataLarge scale storage and efficient querying of provenanceInteroperability and propagation of provenance across applicationsProvenance infrastructure for eScience, social media, business, Web applications, and scientific discourseTools for visualizing and browsing provenance informationProvenance summarization to aid usability and scalabilityKeywords: Accepted papers list.
