The concept of Intelligence in Enterprise Systems came about during the early 21st century with a focus on Intelligent Enterprise Architecture. Early investigations have tended to focus on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), Enterprise Application Integration (EAI), Enterprise Knowledge Management (EKM), Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Health Informatics. Enterprise technology has led the way in improving processes and efficiencies in large-scale (generally) distributed systems.

There have been significant improvements in underlying network technologies resulting from developments in mobile systems and technologies with the integration of geo-location in ad-hoc wireless networks. These developments have enabled: (1) business to gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace by utilising technology and modernizing the organization to cater for the changes that are needed to expand, and (2) healthcare systems to implement EPR and ESR systems; such systems however fail to address intelligent patient monitoring across a range of demographics and conditions.

Currently, enterprise systems are not ‘intelligent’. Research investigating enterprise systems aims to provide computational intelligence by the coupling of AI techniques; Multi-agent Systems (MAS), neural systems, and genetic algorithms either singly or in hybrid approaches with game theoretic solutions offers the potential to improve optimization of agent scheduling. Additionally, the use of intelligent context-aware systems gives a platform which provides an effective basis upon which enterprise can improve scalability, interoperability and integration of personalised service delivery. Intelligent Enterprise Systems should be dynamic; creating a model of itself and the surrounding contextual environment. The challenges become obvious when the need arises to combine more than one technology; what is to be done with the data collected and how data are stored.

Enterprise is complex, adaptive and large-scale systems are inherently complex and as such are not easily understood. However, dynamic systems are essential to understanding how best to meet challenges in a turbulent and changing social, geo-political, and market-driven landscape exemplified by e-Business and e-Healthcare systems in a market driven landscape. The Internet has provided an anchor for businesses to develop enterprise systems around, but change within the enterprise is a necessary ingredient to moving toward an Intelligent Enterprise. The ultimate goal is to build enterprise applications, platforms and systems in theoretical and practical developments.

The workshop provides a forum for engineers, researchers, and scientists to exchange the latest results of Intelligent Enterprise and Context-aware systems in an enterprise context.
