    We are pleased to announce that the Pacific History Association 21st Biennial Conference, jointly organized by the Pacific History Association (PHA), National Taiwan University and National Taitung University will be held on December 3rd-6th, 2014 in Taiwan.

    The conference theme is:

    Lalan, Chalan, Tala, Ara (Path)--Reconnecting Pacific-Asia Histories

    Held for the first time in Taiwan, the Pacific History Association Biennial Conference is starting its 21st edition. The first day of this four-day conference will take place in Taipei with the opening ceremony held at the National Taiwan University. The conference will then head towards the east of Taiwan, where academic conferences and cultural events will be organized in order to experience the abundant culture of Taitung’s indigenous communities.

    This year’s conference expects more than 150 scholars from all over the world to participate and present their papers.

    PHA members include scholars doing research in the fields of anthropology, social sciences, literature, music, language, media communication, education, indigenous studies, cultural studies, environmental resources, etc.

    We therefore sincerely welcome worldwide scholars interested in similar issues to participate in the conference and exchange ideas.

    Please take note that the application of funds for foreign participants requires a long time. The call for papers deadline is end of May 2014.

    Papers or panels that address the conference themes are very welcome. Potential topics for organized panels and individual papers include, but are not limited to:

    1. Linking the Pacific and Asia: the paths of people, materials, ideas from Austronesian migrations, colonial experiences to contemporary connections.

    Topics could include:

    - navigation

    - drifting and encounters

    - betel nuts/kava/rats/pottery as cross-ocean ties

    - relations with Asian power houses in contemporary Pacific

    2. Comparative colonialism: various colonial regimes and experiences in the Pacific area.

    Topics could include:

    - narratives of WWII from islanders and opposite camps

    - colonialism and sports

    - colonial modernities

    3. Histories in plural: the exploration of alternative histories, indigenous epistemology and historical imaginations.

    Topics could include:

    - indigenous epistemology and ontology

    - time-space (ta-va) theory

    - decolonization of history curriculum

    4. Finding the past in the present: variety of genres in historical memories and the making of meanings today in the Pacific, including arts, archives, visual images, and landscape.

    Topics could include:

    - digitalization of the material and the intangible

    - cultural heritage from linguistic perspectives

    - discourses and laws of cultural rights and cultural policy

    - art and performance of cultural continuity and diversity

    - Pacific biographies

    5. Between land and sea: Pacific knowledge, conceptualization, and dynamic engagements with the environment; their divergence with the states, capitalism and globalization.

    Topics could include:

    - nuclear waste and environmental justice

    - disaster and resilience

    - TEK (Traditional ecological knowledge) and cultural and political ecology

    Accepted panels and papers will be listed on the PHA 2014 conference website beginning of Mid of July, 2014.
