DESCRIPTIONMeasurement uncertainty is often confusing to quality practitioners. This occurs partly because the concepts are relatively new, but more importantly are not well known. For example, if your calibration supplier sends in a certificate that includes information on expanded uncertainty and refers to a k-factor, do you know what it means? Could you explain it to an FDA Investigator or a Notified Body auditor? The methodology comes from a 1995 international standard, updated in 2008, JCGM 100:2008 Evaluation of measurement data — Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement. This standard, along with an accompanying standard, JCGM 200:2012 International vocabulary of metrology – Basic and general concepts and associated terms provide the basic framework for modern metrology. These standards are often called GUM and VIM respectively. On the surface they look daunting, especially GUM, since it develops a mathematical model and is equation laden. This audio conference explains the approach without resorting to the mathematical details. The ideas are simple; the equations provide the theoretical underpinning to make the theory robust. You don’t need the equations to understand the methodology. In practical terms, the audio conference explains two basic techniques. The uncertainty budget is a common approach to document the measurement system and provide the details that lead to the expanded uncertainty and the k-factor. The audio conference explains the use of MS Excel to setup the uncertainty budget and perform the calculations. In addition, the US Government’s National Institute of Technology (NIST) offers a no-charge easily downloadable software package, called the Uncertainty Engine, that helps perform the calculations. The audio conference illustrates both the Excel based uncertainty budget and the NIST Uncertainty Engine as practical solutions.Areas covered in the webinarExpanded uncertainty and k-factorsAn explanation of Type A and Type B uncertainty analysisThe functional equation to determine the resultThe Law of Uncertainty PropagationDeveloping an uncertainty budget using MS ExcelUsing the NIST Uncertainty Engine to perform the analysisWho will benefit:Quality ManagersQuality EngineersCalibration managersCalibration managersCalibration techniciansMeteorologistsTechnical employees who support measurement and test equipmentWhy you should attend:Understanding measurement uncertainty is essential to develop and maintain an effective measurement program.
