The 9th International Workshop on Meta-synthesis and Complex SystemsChengdu/Jiuzhaigou, ChinaJune 21-26, 2009WelcomeThe International Workshop on Meta-Synthesis and Complex Systems is formerly as a Sino-Japanworkshop to facilitate the exchanges between Chinese and Japanese scholars in the field of systemsscience and complex problem solving. After successful MCS¡¡?2001(Beijing), MCS¡¡?2002 (Shanghai, together with KSS¡¡?2002), MCS¡¡?2003 (Guangzhou, together with KSS¡¡?2003), MCS¡¡?2004(Beijing),MCS¡¡?2005(Kobe, one workshop of IFSR¡¡?2005), MCS¡¡?2006 (Beijing, together with KSS¡¡?2006),MCS¡¡?2007 (Beijing, a registered workshop of ICCS¡¡?2007) and MCS¡¡?2008 (Singapore, a special track atIEEE SMC¡¡?2008), MCS serial workshops gained so much attention worldwide.Studies on complex systems have been greatly developed in recent years, as traditional reductionismmethods are inappropriate or not enough to deal with the complex system modeling which have alreadybeen realized along the system rethinking tide since the end of 1970s. Complexity is regarded as one ofmost salient features and concerning topics among those complex or ill-structured problems for whichpeople engage in exploring effective methods. Meta-synthesis system approach is one of them. It absorbsideas from many disciplines and methods such as meta-analysis, and aims to take advantages of machines(in quantitative intelligence) and humans (in qualitative intelligence) to solve those complex orill-structured problems. The word meta-synthesis is not limited to a system approach proposed by Chinesescientists, but also used by researchers from other domains, such as education, health care and some othersocial sciences research among western scholars. Thus, worldwide exchanges will facilitate the fusion ofdiverse ideas. More foci had been put as computational approaches have been greatly enhanced to exploreknowledge-related technologies have also been widely applied to mine more hidden patterns, tacitmeanings from humans, which thus brings out many new foci on diverse topics, such as agent-basedmodeling about social problems, knowledge network, consensus and convergence technologies, etc.MCS¡¡?2009 will be continuously held to provide opportunities for those researchers who are interested insystems sciences, complex problem solving and advanced modeling, meta-synthesis, artificial life,knowledge-oriented technology and integration, decision sciences and supporting technologies, etc. withthe to facilitate interdisciplinary studies by joining the 20th International Conference on Multi-CriteriaDecision Making (MCDM¡¡?2009) in Chengdu/Jiuzhaigou in June of 2009.In consideration of the topics, scopes, paper quality improvement, and increasing participants, especiallyMCS appeals more young people, the adoption of MCS as one part of MCDM¡¡?2009 will bring new viewsor new problems about system modeling and complex problem solving especially during the unstructuredsocial problem solving to MCDM. Also MCS workshop will also be benefited from a much widercommunity and exchanges. We hope to see a growing community to distribute new ideas and latestresearch results on effective concepts, methodologies and advanced tools to tackle those wicked problemsand to explore next-generation tools for complex system modeling and human decision making. JoiningMCDM¡¡?2009 will help MCS workshop to intensify the research on MCDM practically applied into themeta-synthesis and complex problem solving studies, such as exploring new or implementing availableconsensus technologies into meta-synthesis system enabled by Web 2.0 technologies.ScopeThe presentations and papers at KSS2006 are expected to cover but not limited to the following areas:¡§C AI and fuzzy systems¡§C Chance Discovery¡§C Complex System Modeling and Complexity¡§C Consensus methods and technologies¡§C Creation of agent-based social systems sciences¡§C Decision support systems¡§C Knowledge creation: creativity support, awareness support, etc.¡§C Knowledge discovery: data mining, text mining, and Web intelligence tools¡§C Knowledge systems engineering¡§C Meta-synthesis and advanced modeling¡§C Social network analysis and knowledge management¡§C Systems methodologies¡§C etc.Important DatesDecember 15, 2008 Submission of full-length paperJanuary 5, 2009 Notification of acceptanceJanuary 31, 2009 Final camera-ready paperJanuary 31, 2009 Early registration opensMarch 10, 2009 Early registration closesIf you just want to attend the workshop with no full-length paper, you are also welcome to submitan abstract before February 28, 2009.
