Call For Papers - CFP
1st IEEE International Workshop on Environmental and Social Impact of Vehicular Communication Systems (EVICS)CALL FOR PAPERS1st IEEE International Workshop on Environmental and SocialImpact of Vehicular Communication Systems (EVICS)http://www7.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/~dressler/evics2009/held in conjunction withIEEE WoWMoM 2009June 19, 2009, Kos, GreeceAims and ScopeThe establishment of network connections among vehicles and betweenvehicles and an existing network infrastructure is one of the mostchallenging research fields in the networking domain. Vehicles can beseen as a mobile communication infrastructure with strong dynamicsw.r.t. network topology and changing communication channel conditions. The applications are manifold ranging from comfort services, e.g.traffic information systems, to safety applications, e.g. emergencywarnings. Until now, the development of protocols was primarily inspiredby existing Internet solutions and the advances in mobile ad hocnetworking. However, the specific characteristics of vehicular networksmay require quite different communication paradigms. For example, thenodes usually do not have severe power and form factor constraints, andthey might be always on. On the other hand, wireless connections may notbe stable for a longer time period and the network density is expectedto vary from sparse to very dense networks. This workshop aims to provide a discussion forum for novel solutions andservices looking into V2V and V2I communication issues focusing onenvironmental aspects such as optimized CO2 emission, and road trafficshaping, i.e. optimized usage of available routes for all vehicles.Furthermore, con-cerning the drivers or users of vehicles, the serviceaspect is especially challenging in public trans-portation and for fleetmanagement. The workshop will highlight the latest achievements in theresearch area of vehicular communication, with the goal of bringingtogether the different research communities. We especially targetprotocols and solutions besides simple "802.11+MANET" based solutionsand explicitly encourage submission of scientifically sound experimentalwork. Authors are required to center their work around the environmentaland social impacts of IVC and clearly state in the abstract how one ormore of these issues are addressed in the paper. We are looking for both technical and position papers presenting newapplications for IVC that we have not seen so far, and new ways toexploit existing communication techniques for more efficient IVC. Topicsof interest include but are not limited to:* Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) and Vehicle-to-Infrastructure (V2I) communication* Inter-Vehicular Communication (IVC) and Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANET)* Exploiting IVC and intra-vehicular networks for improved safety* IVC for reduced CO2 emission and road traffic shaping* IVC algorithms, protocols, and services (MAC, routing, datadissemination, Internet-connectivity)* IVC related security, safety, and privacy issues and conflicts* Mobility modeling and simulation environmentsSubmission GuidelinesSubmission of both technical papers and position papers is encouraged.Papers should contain original material and not be previously published,or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Accepted papers willbe published by the IEEE in the combined WoWMoM 2009 proceedings, hencemanuscripts must be formatted in accordance with the IEEE ComputerSociety author guidelines (max. 6 pages, IEEE 8.5x11 conference format).Submission will be handled by EDAS(<https://edas.info/newPaper.php?c=7217&>).Important DatesPaper Submission Deadline: February 20, 2009Paper Acceptance Notification: April 1, 2009Camera-Ready Paper Submission: April 10, 2009Workshop Organizing Committee* Falko Dressler, University of Erlangen, Germany,dresslerinformatik.uni-erlangen.de* J?rg Ott, Helsinki University of Technology, Finland, jonetlab.tkk.fi* Eylem Ekici, Ohio State University, USA, ekiciece.osu.edu-- Dr. Falko DresslerComputer Networks and Communication SystemsUniversity of Erlangen, GermanyPhone: +49 9131 85-27914 / Fax: +49 9131 85-27409mailto:dresslerinformatik.uni-erlangen.dehttp://www7.informatik.uni-erlangen.de/~dressler/
