M4D 2008 - 1st International Conference on "M4D":Mobile Communication Technology for Development11-12 December, 2008, Centre for HumanITKarlstad University, Karlstad, Sweden<http://m4d.humanit.org/> http://m4d.humanit.orgNew developments in mobile communication technologies have generated anumber of possibilities for economic and social development in low-incomecountries. M4D 2008 focuses specifically on mobile technologies within thebroader field of study that has now become known as ICT4D ("ICT forDevelopment"). We strive to have an event where all types of actors are included. Therewill be a research stream with a traditional conference design and apractitioner’s stream where industry, NGOs, and public bodies candisseminate their knowledge.Industry keynote by Gabriel Solomon, GSM AssociationResearch keynote by Richard Heeks, Univ. Manchester We welcome presentations within all "m" areas: m-government, m-health,m-banking, m-policy, etc., as well as social and cultural aspects of M4D.While the "m" in this context often implies low tech it is also noteworthythat wireless connections have promises for the development of broadbandnetworks: there will be a special workshop on wireless broadband networksfor developing regions including mesh networks.Submission of papers and poster abstracts is still open for the mainconference but will close at the end of October (workshops are closed).
