Hybrid Optical and Wireless Access Networks (HOWANs) consists of amulti-hop wireless mesh network (WMN) at the front-end and an opticalaccess network, e.g., a passive optical network (PON) at the back-end.PONs use inexpensive and passive optical splitters to divide a singlefiber into separate strands feeding individual subscribers. EPON is basedon the Ethernet standard, which comes with the added benefit of theeconomies-of-scale of Ethernet, and provides simple and easy-to-manageconnectivity both at the customer premises and at the central office. Awireless mesh network (WMN) is a communication network made up of radionodes organized in a mesh topology, which is reliable and offersredundancy. The mesh architecture sustains signal strength by breakinglong distances into a series of shorter hops. Intermediate nodes not onlyboost the signal, but also cooperatively make forwarding decisions basedon their knowledge of the network states. Compared with pure WMNs or PONs,HOWANs provide a more cost-effective way for broadband access networkinfrastructure and integrates the benefits from WMNs and PONs. Forexample, the reliability, robustness and high capacity of PON isintegrated with the flexibility and cost saving of wireless networks. However, as a hybrid of two distinct networks and technologies, HOWANspost a lot of challenges for routing, survivability, service provisioning,QoS, and network design and optimization. The First International Workshop on Hybrid Optical and Wireless AccessNetworks (HOWAN 2009) is a unique event for discussing open issues onoriginal research results in the areas of architecture, implementation, optimization and applications of Hybrid Optical and Wireless AccessNetworks (HOWANs).The scope of this workshop is to act as a catalyst for a thorough overviewof hybrid optical and wireless access networks by providing a forum foracademia, industry and standardization organization. Therefore, theworkshop will focus on the near- to mid-term architecture, applications, algorithms, and deployment. We solicit papers covering various topics of interest that include, butnot limited to the following. All tracks are open to both research andindustry contributions.Multi-hop wireless mesh networksPassive optical networksNode architecture and design of hybrid optical and wireless networksEmerging wireless/optical applicationsQoS management for hybrid access networksPON and WDM-PON network experimentsRadio over Fiber (RoF)FTTx network architecture and applicationsRouting and multicast over hybrid optical and wireless networksService resilience and availability of hybrid optical and wireless networksApplications and evolutions of hybrid access networksNetwork design, control, and performance in HOWANsCapacity analysis, flow and congestion control in HOWANsOptimization of hybrid optical and wireless networksEvolution of HOWAN access networksBroadband wireless access in HOWANsSecurity and privacy in HOWANsNew services and applicationsTest-bed and prototype implementationStandardization issuesINSTRUCTIONS FOR THE AUTHORSThe HOWAN 2009 papers will be in the INTERNET 2009 Proceedings, publishedby IEEE Computer Society Press, and posted on-line via IEEE XPlore DigitalLibrary. IEEE will index the papers with major indexes.Important deadlines:Submission (full paper) March 20, 2009Notification April 25, 2009Registration May 10, 2009Camera ready May 15, 2009Only .pdf or .doc files will be accepted for paper submission.
