First Workshop on Open Source Software Development and Applications (OSSDA 2011)On May 12, 2011To be held in conjunction withJCSSE 2011 ? Joint International Conference in Computer Science and Software EngineeringMahidol University, Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, May 11-13, 2011Open source software has played a significant role in IT industry around the world. The categories of open source software range from office and desktop software to the enterprise level software running on servers, networks, and clusters. In addition, users can acquire open source software with the minimum cost, as well as receive valuable supports from the community around the world. In Thailand, many companies, universities and research institutes have developed many interesting open source projects even though they have few supports while the market value is worth around 25% of the whole IT industry. Thus, open source software has provided alternative but effective solutions at the comparable performance.Recently, the number of open source projects has been dramatically increased whereas many leading IT companies such as Oracle and Microsoft have started to acquire open source software to be in their own hands. With the sign of this development, the main question is how to promote, build and maintain a sustainable community of users and developers around the open source projects. The goal of this workshop is to bring together interested academics from universities, practitioners from developers, and business people from industry to demonstrate their knowledge and exchange their experiences in developing open source software as well as discuss topics related to the area of open source software development and applications. The workshop will offer an opportunity for participants to share experiences and discuss challenges involved in building and maintaining open source software. The workshop will also identify key research issues and challenges that lie ahead.Workshop CommitteeKridiwat Suttiwaree Naval Research and Development Office, Royal Thai NavyNuansri Denwattana Burapha UniversityPhisan Santitamnont Chulalongkorn UniversitySompan Chansilp Suranaree University of TechnologySudsanguan Ngamsuriyaroj Mahidol UniversitySukumal Kitisin Kasetsart UniversityTawatchai Iempairote Association of Thailand Open Source FederationVirach Sornlertlamvanich NECTECWipat Srutiprom Prince of Songkla UniversityTopics of InterestWorkshop topics include (but are not limited to):challenges of developing and maintaining open source softwarecost-benefit models of developing open source softwaredevelopment of open source software for specific application domains such as healthcare, education, logistics, jewelry, food industry, tourism, etcmodels and classification schemes of open source softwarepractical approaches and suggested solutions in deploying open source softwarebest practices in developing and deploying open source softwareframeworks, methodologies, technologies, tools, and environments to support open source communitiesbuilding open source communities for corporate communities, academy, governments, individuals, social networks, global software teamsReports and lessons learned on developing and maintaining open source softwareSubmission GuidelinesAuthors are invited to submit manuscripts reporting unpublished ideas, research work, and recent developments in the topics related to the workshop.
