First Workshop on Open Source Software Development and Applications (OSSDA 2011)

    On May 12, 2011

To be held in conjunction with

JCSSE 2011 ? Joint International Conference in Computer Science and Software Engineering

Mahidol University, Nakhon Pathom, Thailand, May 11-13, 2011

Open source software has played a significant role in IT industry around the world. The categories of open source software range from office and desktop software to the enterprise level software running on servers, networks, and clusters. In addition, users can acquire open source software with the minimum cost, as well as receive valuable supports from the community around the world. In Thailand, many companies, universities and research institutes have developed many interesting open source projects even though they have few supports while the market value is worth around 25% of the whole IT industry. Thus, open source software has provided alternative but effective solutions at the comparable performance.

Recently, the number of open source projects has been dramatically increased whereas many leading IT companies such as Oracle and Microsoft have started to acquire open source software to be in their own hands. With the sign of this development, the main question is how to promote, build and maintain a sustainable community of users and developers around the open source projects.

The goal of this workshop is to bring together interested academics from universities, practitioners from developers, and business people from industry to demonstrate their knowledge and exchange their experiences in developing open source software as well as discuss topics related to the area of open source software development and applications. The workshop will offer an opportunity for participants to share experiences and discuss challenges involved in building and maintaining open source software. The workshop will also identify key research issues and challenges that lie ahead.
