Multimedia technologies and networking infrastructure havechanged human social behavior. One typical example iseducation. The impact of distance learning to traditionaluniversities in particular allows educational professionals torethink about how to efficiently and effectively applymultimedia technologies to improve instruction, as well as toencourage students to learn. Although multimedia technologieshave already been used widely in e-learning, variousconsiderations should be carefully addressed from bothpedagogical and technological perspectives, to ensure thesuccessful incorporation of these technologies in e-learning.This ACM workshop aims to discuss problems, current studies, and solutions in how to use multimedia and communicationtechnologies to improve e-learning. Especially, presentationsshould address the difference between using and without usingmultimedia technologies in education. Practical solutions areencouraged, although pedagogical theories may be used tosupport the solutions. The first MTDL 2009 Workshop was held in Beijing, China, followed by MTDL 2010, which was held in Firenze, Italy.
