Medical Bionics ? neural interfaces for damaged nerves

    Invitation from the Conference Chair

The Bionics Institute is delighted to host our 2011 international conference 'Medical Bionics ? neural interfaces for damaged nerves'. Our inaugural meeting, held in November 2008, was a great success attracting over 150 registrants from more than 15 countries.

This conference will bring together a wide range of eminent and early career researchers, clinicians and industry representatives working in the diverse field of medical bionics. Although they will travel from all regions of the world and bring expertise from disciplines as diverse as biotechnology, engineering, ICT, polymer science, nanotechnology and medicine, there will be one aim that unites them all - to search for solutions to the human health challenges of the future.

The conference will explore the following themes:

Overview of medical bionics: design, development & commercialisation

    Bionic Hearing: improved hearing technologies

Bionic Vision: retinal and CNS prostheses

Neurobionics: neural interfaces for CNS and spinal cord stimulation

Enabling technologies for medical bionics: ICT, smart materials and drug delivery technologies, and

Future directions in medical bionics; 'blue-sky' projects and emerging technologies.

The Scientific Advisory Committee is assembling an exciting program that includes eminent local and overseas invited speakers. One of the most distinct aspects of this meeting will be the great breadth of presentations; describing new and emerging disciplines that will help shape the development of medical bionics over the next two decades. Further, the meeting will provide inspiration and focus for the next generation of researchers in this field. This will be achieved through a strong emphasis on poster presentations, providing a valuable opportunity for new investigators to showcase their work and meet others working in their area of research.

The Conference will be held at Silverwater Resort at Phillip Island, Victoria, only 80 minutes from Melbourne. This modern resort is fully equipped for conferences, with luxury accommodation and facilities. The views of the Bass coast are stunning. Phillip Island is world famous for its delightful fairy penguin parade, major events, native Australian wildlife, beautiful coastline, surfing, local wine and gourmet produce.

I warmly extend an invitation to you to join us for this exciting event.
