Over the last 20 years, data rates in mobile communications have seen aten-fold increase every five years. Compared to which, mobile networkoperators have observed a true explosion of data traffic within theirnetworks only over the last few months. Although user expectations in termsof data throughput and service experience are growing and data usage isbecoming intensive due to the generalization of flat rates, the averagerevenue per user (ARPU) has to remain the same in order to ensure economicviability for mobile network operators in mature markets. This translatesinto a need to reduce the cost per transmitted bit. In addition, the networkupgrades have to be smooth and make use of the existing infrastructure (asmuch as possible) in order to take advantage of previous investments. However, for current and upcoming cellular technologies (e.g. HSPA, LTE R8),the achievable data rates are strongly dependent on the users' positions ina network. In these systems, a considerable gap between cell-edge andcell-center performance is observed due to inter-cell interference, whichpresents a major limitation for state-of-the art mobile networks. Thephysical nature of the propagation channel makes the throughput in a cellnon-homogenous; the challenge for the design of next generation systemsprimarily relies on the ability to boost this average performance, especially for the benefit of cell-edge users. This workshop will offer expert views and an opportunity for opendiscussions on relevant topics, which include:. Position aware communication technologies. Positioning in future cellular mobile networks. Cooperation technologies for improving communications andpositioning performance. Femto base stations for communications and positioning. Beamforming and sectorization. Multi-antenna channel measurements. Advanced relays architectures (e.g. capacity improvement, movingrelays, multi-hop). Interference alignment. Coordinated Multi-Point Processing (e.g. Joint processing and/orcoordinated scheduling). Interference management in heterogeneous networks. Advanced receivers. Inter-cell interference cancellation in LTE-A. System-level evaluation with advanced receivers (e.g.,link-to-system level mapping with interference cancellation). Advanced channel estimation and pilot design. Joint backhaul & access network design. Aggressive frequency re-use and beamforming approaches. Experimental validation and field trialsSubmission GuidelinesThe workshop accepts only novel, previously unpublished papers. Paper lengthshould not exceed five- pages in a standard IEEE conference, two-columnformat (including all text, figures, and references). One additional page isallowed but with a charge for the one additional page. Papers exceeding 6pages will not be reviewed at all. Please see the author information page onthe IEEE WCNC 2012 website for further submission guidelines:http://www.ieee-wcnc.org/AuthorGuidelines.html
Accepted papers must be presented at the workshop. The presenter mustregister for the workshop before the deadline for author registration.Failure to register before the deadline will result in automatic withdrawalof the paper from the workshop proceedings and the program. All papersselected for publication will be included in the IEEE WCNC proceedings andIEEE digital library.Submissions should be made through EDAS.Important Dates.
