    Overview

    The 40th Annual Frontiers in Education (FIE) Conference is the major international conference about educational innovations and research in engineering and computing. FIE 2010 continues a long tradition of disseminating results in these areas. It is an ideal forum for sharing ideas; learning about developments in computer science, engineering, and technology education; and interacting with colleagues in these fields.

    Venues

    Proposals for participation in the 2010 FIE Conference can be submitted in the following formats:

    Papers: full paper

    Papers: work-in-progress (WIP)

    Special sessions

    Panels

    Workshops

    Each of these formats is described in the sections following the table below. In addition, FIE 2010 offers travel grants to support participation of new faculty who are presenting full papers at the conference. More information is provided in the section on New Faculty Fellows.

    Schedule

    Proposals are submitted in a two-stage process. First, initial versions of the proposals (abstracts in the case of papers) must be submitted by January 13, 2010, and then they will be reviewed. If you are invited to submit for the second stage of the process, you must submit a preliminary version of the complete document by March 22, 2010. For the paper category, these documents are peer-reviewed. If accepted, final versions of the documents as they will appear in the conference proceedings must be submitted by May 24, 2010.

    Papers

    Both full papers and works-in-progress (WIP) can be submitted in one of three categories:

    Innovative Practice Category

    Papers in the innovative practice category share information about how a faculty member or team has developed and implemented novel practices across the breadth of topics of interest to conference participants.

    Research-to-Practice Category

    Papers in the research-to-practice category share information about how a faculty member or group of faculty members has developed and implemented new practices explicitly based on research in engineering education.

    Research Category

    Papers in the research category present new research results or research methodologies related to educational methods or theories.

    Abstract Due Date

    Abstracts for all full papers and WIPs are due by January 13, 2010. The abstract must contain: authorâ?™s name, abstract title, authorâ?™s affiliation, phone number, fax number, and e-mail address. Each abstract should be between 300 and 500 words in length.

    Paper Due Date

    If the abstract is accepted, papers are due by March 22, 2010.

    Peer Review

    Full papers and WIPs will be peer-reviewed by at least three reviewers.

    Page Length

    Full papers in the research, innovative practice, and research-to-practice categories will be limited to six pages. Works-in-progress will be limited to two pages.

    Special Sessions

    Special sessions offer participants opportunities to explore particular issues in greater depth in interactive settings. The special session facilitators structure the agenda and interactions. Special sessions are intended to provide presenters and participants "collaborative learning experiences at the frontiers of education."

    Panels

    Panel sessions can provide multiple perspectives on important issues in engineering and computing education and allow participants to contribute to the dialogue about these issues.

    Workshops

    Workshops provide participants with an opportunity to extend their knowledge and strengthen their skills in selected areas of current interest.

    New Faculty Fellows

    FIE 2010 will offer a maximum of ten $1,000 travel grants to support the involvement of new faculty presenting full papers at the conference. Eligible applicants are:

    Assistant professors of computer science, engineering, or technology with no more than two years of employment as a faculty member or an instructor at the time of abstract submission.

    Doctoral candidates defending dissertations during the 2009â?“2010 academic year.

    A fellowship packet will be sent to candidates after May 28, 2010. New Faculty Fellows are expected to register and attend the entire conference.
