Special Issue: Convergence of Digital TV Systems and ServicesInternational Journal of Digital Multimedia BroadcastingThemigration from analog to digital of the broadcasting technologies, already well-consolidated for satellite systems, is becoming a realityalso for terrestrial transmission. The digital terrestrial television(DTT) is also evolving to offer interactive services and a degree offlexibility which can be exploited to offer tailored application tousers which includes, for instance, interactivity, different levels ofpersonalization and innovative location-based as well as context-awareservices. A clear example of this trend is given by the rising successof the IPTV which allows for a degree of flexibility on the offeredservices unknown to the other more traditional broadcasting systems. Some satellite operators are starting to launch IPTV services usingdirect satellite links, moreover some terrestrial internet serviceproviders are offering digital TV channels embedded in the IP streamingover XDSL. Furthermore, IPTV services are likely to be broadcast andwireless, with the income of new technologies such as WiMAX. Last butnot least, TV and broadcast services for mobile users are also beingdeployed in many countries using DVB-H and will be soon available on aneven broader scale thanks to its satellite counterpart, DVB-SH. In thenear future, a set of different technologies able to offer personalizedand customized services to different classes of users are expected inthe area of the wireless broadcasting, and the convergence ontechnologies is auspicious. This concept entails different levels ofconvergence, namely, at terminal level (one device fits all), atservice level (convergence of traditional fixed, mobile, and broadcastservices), at transport and network levels with a common andstandardized set of protocols, and at access layer thanks to theharmonic coexistence of different access technologiesThisspecial issue aims to promote the state-of-the-art research works onthe integration of DTT/satellite/IPTV systems for the broadcasting ofmultimedia and interactive services.
