The Interactive Media Institute, in collaboration with the Virtual Reality Medical Institute, is pleased to announce the first Call for Papers for the International Association of CyberPsychology, Training, & Rehabilitation’s (iACToR) 17th Annual Conference. The CyberPsychology & CyberTherapy Conference (CYBER17) is scheduled for September 25-28, 2012 in Brussels, Belgium.

CYBER17 brings together researchers, clinicians, funders and policymakers to share and discuss trends in healthcare and technology. CYBER17 continues to seek input from a wider segment of the scientific community, and is interested in attracting experts in clinical therapy and rehabilitation, cognitive sciences, social sciences, and computer sciences dedicated to meeting the conference’s core topic: experiencing the future of health & well-being.

CYBER17 will continue to build upon its 17-year legacy, which includes the 2011 conference just completed in Gatineau, Canada. (CYBER16 attracted 200+ participants from 25 countries.) Locating this year’s conference in Europe’s capital, Brussels, provides a unique opportunity to raise the conference’s visibility and highlight the importance of technology and healthcare research. Prominent academic representatives from Europe, North America, and Asia will serve as Scientific Chairs and on its Scientific Committee. iACToR’s Secretary General, Professor Brenda K. Wiederhold, who divides her time between the U.S. and Europe (http://iactor.ning.com), will serve as the conference’s chief organizer and host.

Because of the international nature of CYBER17 and the expanded focus of its theme, we recognize the importance of extending our invitation to professionals around the world dedicated to enhancing public awareness of how technology can overcome obstacles and increase access to top quality healthcare for all citizens. Abstract and Presentation Themes

The Annual CyberPsychology & CyberTherapy Conference began as a symposium that featured presentations dealing mostly with conceptual matters and future possibilities at the Medicine Meets Virtual Reality Conference. CYBER17 has now grown to a full-scale conference that seeks presentations whose controlled clinical trials demonstrate unique applications of cutting edge technologies that improve the access and increase the quality of healthcare. CYBER17’s focus areas include:

1. The Impact of Technologies as Tools

CYBER17 will continue its examination of the exciting applications of advanced technologies being used in training, therapy, rehabilitation, and education for the improvement of the quality and availability of healthcare for people around the globe.

2. The Influence of New Technologies

CYBER17 will further its investigation into how new technologies are influencing behavior and society through the use of positive technology, healthy ageing and well-being.

3. The Imprint of Social Networking

CYBER17 will embrace, as it did in 2011, the exploration of social networking tools on individual behavior and societal relations.

4. The Introduction of New Technologies and New Terms

CYBER17 will study the psychological aspects of new areas influenced by technology such as cyberfashion, cyberadvertising and cyberstalking.

Abstract and Presentation Types

You can submit an abstract to one of the following three “types” of communications:

Poster

Oral

Symposium

The difference between an oral presentation and a symposium is that independent oral presentations will be regrouped together by the Organizing Committee according to keywords provided by the authors, while a symposium consists of a group of four or five oral presentations selected and submitted together by one symposium chair.

Submission of Abstracts and Papers

If you would like to present a poster, an oral presentation or a symposium at CYBER17, please submit an abstract for the Scientific Committee to review based off of the guidelines below. Workshops submissions are by invitation only.

Review Procedure: Each submission is peer-reviewed and will be selected based on scientific merit. Abstracts should clearly outline results from scientific studies. All presentations must contain original and scientifically valid information. Reports on completed research are clearly favored over descriptions of planned research. Commercial promotion and funding requests are not appropriate. The Scientific Committee will blindly review all abstracts and may invite author(s) to make a poster presentation at the conference even if they requested an oral presentation. The oral/poster/reject decision is at the discretion of the Scientific Committee.

Abstract Preparation:

Required structure: Title, Author/s, Affiliation/s, Short Abstracts (250 words), Keywords, Introduction/Problem, Method/Tools, Results, Conclusion. You must adhere to the document format requirements of IOS Press.

Novelty/Discussion: Please cover what makes this research different from prior work by yourself or by others. Please focus on the most unique aspect of your research, instead of broad implications.

References: Optional but appreciated. Please use ONLY the IOS Press standard bibliographic format (see instructions and below).

File formats: Acceptable formats are Word 97, Word 2000, or Word XP format (.doc). No .docx files, please.

The conference is in English and all abstracts will need to be in English. Please check spelling and grammar as your abstract will be printed in the conference syllabus.

Abstract and Full Paper Publication:

Oral presenters are required to submit a short abstract (250 words).

Oral presenters are required to submit a 2-page extended abstract. The short abstract must be included in the 2-page extended abstract so it can be published in a regular issue of the Journal of CyberTherapy & Rehabilitation (JCR), indexed in PsycINFO, Gale, EBSCO, Cabell and SCOPUS and is currently under review with Medline. Once accepted, the 2-page extended abstracts may be published in an IOS Press book as a part of its Studies in Health Technology and Informatics series, which is indexed in MEDLINE.

Oral presenters are required to submit a full paper up to 5 pages in length. Authors of accepted oral submissions may be invited to submit a 5-page paper to be included in the book. In addition, for those who present their abstract in person, their full paper will be published in the Annual Review of CyberTherapy and Telemedicine, indexed in PsycINFO.

Presenter Requirements:

Oral presentations are anticipated to be 15 minutes long plus 5 minutes for questions.

Presenters must register for the conference. There is a limit of one oral/symposium presentation per first author per registration. For a full paper to be published in IOS Press, the study must be presented in person at the conference. Any absences will result in forfeiture of registration costs as well as an automatic rejection in the inclusion of the full paper in the Annual Review of CyberTherapy and Telemedicine. (ARCTT)
