TRIZ, standing for Theory of Inventive Problem Solving, is a Russian design methodology that examines laws of technical systems' evolution. One of its laws, law of increasing ideality, is particularly useful in lean design & manufacturing. Going specific, one of the paths followed by systems in adherence to this law is convolution. Convolution contracts the system (device or process) in mass, volume & energy consumption while simultaneously raising its functional performance. Systems convolute in several ways, getting leaner, slimmer & smoother. Best convolution occurs when a 'smart' substance replaces entire or sizable portion of system. For instance, sophisticated cameras have lenses filled with an intelligent gel. Instead of lens mechanically displacing to adjust focus, it adjusts its shape microscopically at different locations. In some cases, even refractive index can be varied differentially as function of distance from centre to periphery of lens, e.g. lens with higher refractive index at centre and lower at edges can be ‘synthesized’ for attaining a desired focal length & brightness.
