special issue on "Computational Awareness" in theInternational Journal of Machine Learning and Cybernetics (Springer). The goal of computational awareness (CA) is torealize awareness in computing machines. Awarenessis the ability to perceive, to feel, or to be conscious ofevents, objects or sensory patterns. It may not leaddirectly to full comprehension. Awareness oftenimplies vigilance in observing and alertness indrawing inferences from what one experiences.Compared with computational intelligence (CI), thegoal of CA is less ambitious. Nevertheless, CA couldbe more important for solving practical problems. Wethink awareness is the bridge between perception andcognition. Without being aware, a system may neverbecome intelligent. Moreover, awareness could makecomputation towards the goal of CA more efficientby shedding of irrelevant possibilities. In the last two decades, CA has been studiedmainly from an engineering perspective. To createreal aware systems, however, studying differentapplications in an ad-hoc manner is not enough. Weneed to study all kinds of CA related problems in aunified framework, gain more insight about awaresystems and the mechanism of awareness existing indifferent living beings. The goal of this special issueis to provide an opportunity for researchers, engineers, and scientists to publish their latest resultsrelated to CA. The topics of interest include, but arenot limited to the following:О Awareness mechanism and modelingО Awareness ontology and semanticsО NeurocomputingО Fuzzy logic and rough setО Granular computingО Agents and swarm intelligenceО Awareness for humanО Context awarenessО Situation awarenessО Intention awarenessО Emotion awarenessО Preference awarenessО Location awarenessО Position awarenessО Goal awarenessО Risk awarenessО Danger awarenessО Chance awarenessО Awareness for systemsО Context awarenessО Energy awarenessО Capability awarenessО Resource awarenessО Fault awarenessО Safety awarenessО User awarenessО Privacy awarenessBefore submission authors should carefully readthe instruction to authors which is available athttp://www.springer.com/engineering/computational
