SPARSITY IN COMMUNICATIONS

The last few years have seen an explosive growth of activity in the area of compressed sensing, attracting researchers from applied mathematics, computer science, electrical engineering, information theory, signal processing, communication theory, optimization theory, and mathematical statistics. The main motivation leading to the development of compressed sensing theory was the insight that many natural and man-made signals, when represented in a suitable basis, are sparse in the sense that they can be described by a small number of significant coefficients relative to their dimension. Systematically accounting for sparsity properties has the potential to drastically reduce the data acquisition effort and improve the accuracy of signal recovery at the cost of increased computational complexity. The goal of this special issue of JCN is to elicit theoretical and practical aspects of the compressed sensing paradigm in communication theory and systems, wireless communications, and wireless (sensor) networks. Articles for this special issue will be solicited through an open call-for-papers to experts in the field from industry and academia. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
" Information-theoretic limits of compressed sensing
" Completion of low-rank matrices
" Sparsity in wired and wireless communication channels
" Sparsity in ultra-wideband communication
" Sparsity in sensor networks
" Sparsity in traffic models
" Characterization of sparse communication signals
" Receive algorithms exploiting signal sparsity and/or channel sparsity
" Modeling of sparse communication channels
" Exploiting sparsity in channel measurements
Continuing JCN¡¯s tradition of fast turnaround together with full peer reviews, a tentative schedule is set as follows:
