This phenomenon has given grounds to the hope that postmodern Geographic Information Systems (GIS) could rely on valuable alternative sources of geographic data. The term Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) may refer to maps created through the efforts of volunteers who submit geographic data, such as in the case of the OpenStreetMaps project; however, it also includes other forms of geospatial data published on the Web, such as the geotagged photographs of Flickr and geotagged entries in Wikipedia. VGI can be used for a wide range of applications and may have several advantages over official geographic data. These include lower costs to generate and use data and a potentially larger set of up-to-date samples. On the other hand, there are many aspects of VGI that are still challenging for researchers, such as the definition of appropriate methods of assessing accuracy and quality, synthesizing, verifying, integrating, and distributing such information. This book aims to present the main fundamentals and applications of all types of VGI, its recent developments and future trends. The book will certainly help readers to reason about the question of whether it is reasonable to count on volunteered efforts to develop high quality geographic data sources in the future, or VGI is a short term phenomenon that will fade away.ObjectiveVGI is a growing area of information gathering and has attracted the attention of many researchers worldwide. However, the topic has been so far mostly addressed in research papers in journals or in conference proceedings. The objective of this book is to provide a concise publication covering the main fundamentals, applications and the current challenges of VGI, to act as reference material for professionals, researchers and students of several related disciplines. VGI has emerged as a promising resource which can revolutionise GIS, in which individuals are able to assert their own views of their surroundings and play a part in local decision making. Nonetheless, there are still a number of open questions which need to be further investigated and discussed. This book will examine different issues within the topic, including: how such assertive method of collecting geospatial information can be complementary to authoritative methods employed by government agencies and private industry; how can VGI be framed within the larger domain of sensor networks; how to deal with VGI preservation, that is, how volunteers can be kept motivated to contribute; what are the limitations imposed on VGI by different communication technologies; how to assess accuracy and quality of data; and how to address reliability, accessibility, and sustainability of VGI.Target AudienceThe target audience of this book will be composed of professionals and researchers working with Volunteered Geographic Information in various disciplines, e.g., GIScience, spatial computing, geography, cartography, to name but a few. In addition, the proposed book will be a reference for research scholars, a course supplement to students pursuing GIScience-related subjects.Recommended Topics- Accuracy and quality of data in VGI- Geospatial data and interoperability standards- VGI collection, dissemination, and curation- Integration of VGI in SDI (Spatial Data Infrastructure)- Integrating VGI and Linked Geo Data- VGI and government- Application of VGI in GIS education- Human computer interfaces in VGI- VGI and big spatial data- GIR (Geographic Information Retrieval) applied to VGI- Reputation, trust and confidentiality issues in VGI- Uncertainty in VGI- VGI applications and tools- Integrating VGI data from multiples sources- Exploring semantics in VGI- Practical applications of VGI in research and operation- New trends in VGI- The future of VGISubmission ProcedureResearchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before December 5th, 2015, a chapter proposal of 1,000 to 2,000 words clearly explaining the mission and content of their proposed chapter. Authors will be notified by December 20th, 2015, about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted byFebruary 28th, 2016, and all interested authors must consult the guidelines for manuscript submissions at http://www.igi-global.com/publish/contributor-resources/before-you-write/
prior to submission. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.Note: There are no submission or acceptance fees for manuscripts submitted to this book publication, Trust in Knowledge Management and Systems in Organizations. All manuscripts are accepted based on a double-blind peer review editorial process. All proposals should be submitted through the E-Editorial DiscoveryTM online submission manager.PublisherThis book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the "Information Science Reference" (formerly Idea Group Reference), "Medical Information Science Reference," "Business Science Reference," and "Engineering Science Reference" imprints.
