The data mining field has developed, though vigorously, under rather ad hoc and vague concepts. The goals of the Foundations of Data Mining Symposium are the following: laying sound foundations for mining and discovery, shaping new data mining paradigms, seeking solutions to long standing data mining problems, and stimulating new data mining research directions.

The central objective in this symposium is to explore various fundamental issues of data mining, spark new communications and collaborations between researchers and practitioners, and foster the study of data mining as a scientific field.

Both data mining researchers and practitioners are welcome to submit original and high quality papers on relevant topics in the field of data mining.

Highlights

This symposium, which is conjunction with IEEE 2010 International Conference on Granular Computing, will be held in Silicon Valley, California. Many high-tech companies, such as IBM, Google, and Yahoo etc and several distinguished universities (Stanford, UC Berkeley and etc.) are just around the corner. Some interactions may be organized.

The area now known as Silicon Valley has been a center of technological development since the 1950's. The name Silicon Valley stems from the early 1970's, when the area had become the center for many semiconductor companies. While still hosting semiconductor and microprocessor companies, the region now hosts the headquarters of high tech companies of every kind, including many of the best known and most prestigious names in personal computers, Web search, Internet auctions, networking, storage, databases, etc.
