4th International Workshop onINTELLIGENT SUPPORT IN EXPLORATORY ENVIRONMENTS(ISEE

to be held in conjunction with theFifth European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning"Sustaining TEL: From Innovation to Learning and Practice"Barcelona (Spain), 28 September-1 October 2010(Selected papers will be invited to submit extendedversions for a journal special issue.)IMPORTANT DATES:Submission deadline: July 4th (extended)Notification of acceptance: July 18thCamera-ready version: September 4thWorkshop: 28th/29th September, Learning Café MethodologyOBJECTIVESThere is a growing research interest in Exploratory LearningEnvironments (ELEs). ELEs can be contrasted with more traditionalintelligent systems that are oriented to well-defined tasks anddomains, and generally constraint the learning trajectory byprescribing the sequence of steps and tasks that the learnersundertake. ELEs have been found to be particularly beneficial in termsof providing opportunities for acquiring deep, conceptual andstructural knowledge. However, there are several factors that canimpede appropriate learning within an ELE, and a crucial determinantof learning is the nature of support provided by teachers, peers, technologies and the structure of the learning activities. There has been a lot of work in the learning science literature aboutsupport for learning in ELEs, but developing the technology to supportlearning processes faces several impressive challenges. On thisedition of the workshop, the focus is on using intelligently supportedexploratory environments in ecologically valid situations, e.g.integrated in a classroom or workplace. What are the main challengesthat are faced when exploratory environments are taken out of the laband faced with real-world learners? How can they be overcome? And howcan these systems be evaluated? We encourage researchers to submit papers related to these questionsand the topics listed below. Additional information about thechallenges of providing intelligent support for exploratoryenvironments can be found at the workshop web page athttp://link.lkl.ac.uk/isee
. The web page also enumerates the researchquestions that will be the focus of the workshop. This edition builds on the success of the former three editions ofISEE at EC-TEL'08, AIEd'09, and ICLS'10.TOPICS OF INTEREST (but not limited to)- Adaptive feedback for exploratory tasks- Design of exploratory learning environments- User, domain, and task modelling in exploratory environments- Technical and pedagogical Evaluation of support for explorative environments- Authoring of open-ended tasks with intelligent support- Modelling based on open-ended tasks- Fuzzy and probabilistic techniques for modelling- Educational data mining in exploratory environments- Sequencing of activities in open learning environments- Support for teachers in blended learning scenarios- Collaborative tools for open environments- Collaborative learning in open environmentsWORKSHOP FORMATThe workshop will be discussion-oriented framed around specificquestions. The aim therefore is to have fruitful discussion prior andduring the workshop rather than a mini-conference format. In particular, the methodology used will be based on an adaptation ofthe 'learning discussion forum' (aka Learning Cafe Methodology) whichinvolves experts' introductions and group discussions ensuring that allparticipants can have a direct impact in addressing the workshopquestions. This methodology has been successfully implemented inprevious editions of ISEE, with good feedback from participants.More details of this methodology are given at the workshop webpage (http://link.lkl.ac.uk/isee/
)SUBMISSIONAuthors should submit papers that clearly address one or more of thequestions to be explored at the workshop. All submissions will berefereed by the Programme Committee in order to decide on acceptancebased on originality, clarity, and relevance to the community.Full papers should should be 8-10 pages long and short papers shouldbe up to 5 pages. Authors should follow the same template that isused for the main conference. All papers should be formatted accordingto Springer-Verlag LNCS guidelines. LaTeX and word templates can befound at the Springer-Verlag website (http://www.springer.com/lncs
).Accepted papers will be incluided the workshop proceedings, to bepublished as part of the CEUR Workshop proceedings series (CEUR-WS.orgis a recognized ISSN publication series, with ISSN 1613-0073). Paperswill be discussed prior to the workshop and form the basis for thediscussions on the day of the workshop.Selected papers will also be invited to submit extended versions for ajournal special issue (details to be confirmed at a later stage).Papers should be sent by email to isee.submission
