CALL FOR PAPERSSAHNS 2009The Second International Workshop onSpecialized Ad Hoc Networks and SystemsMontreal, Canada, June 26, 2009http://www.cs.wmich.edu/~alfuqaha/SAHNS2009/
In conjunction with the IEEE 29th International Conferenceon Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS 2009)1. SCOPEThe Workshop provides a forum for engineers and scientists inacademia, industry and government to present their latest researchfindings in specialized ad-hoc networks and systems. As an alternative to one-size-fits-all general solutions in the areaof ad hoc networking and systems, we want to stimulate theapplication-oriented divide-and-conquer approach to ad hoc networkand system research. The goal is to provide sound and efficientspecialized ad hoc networks and systems (SAHNS), suitable forbuilding solutions specific for well-defined classes of applicationsor even individual applications. We want to consider both specialized ad hoc networks and specializedad hoc systems. The latter can be built on top of specialized ad hocnetworks. Alternatively, they can be constructed independently ofspecialized ad hoc networks, e.g., on top of general-purpose ad hocnetworks. It should be emphasized that SAHNS is interested only in solutionsspecific to specialized ad hoc networks and systems. The Workshop isnot interested in broad general-purpose solutions for all ad hocnetworks and systems, or in generic solutions for extremely broadsubclasses of ad hoc networks and systems. For example, the Workshopis not interested in general-purpose solutions for all sensornets orall P2P systems but is instead interested in specialized solutionsfor their application-oriented subclasses. One example of SAHNS targeted by this workshop are Incident AreaNetworks (IANs), dedicated to single incidents or events. An IAN canbe pre-deployed for a planned event, such as a sporting or"nationally significant" event, or can be dynamically deployed foran unplanned incident, such as a local law enforcement situation ora natural disaster. Another example are opportunistic resourceutilization networks (e.g., oppnets), in which the network reacts toa lack of resources by finding and incorporating "helpers" that haveneeded resources or services.Areas and topics of particular interest include, but are not limitedto:a) Design issues for SAHNS:o Novel network and system architectureso Economically-based models and solutionso Operating systems and middlewareo Customized network protocols (incl. cross-layer protocols)o Resource management solutions (incl. resource discovery)o Algorithms and models for localization and mobility managemento Privacy, security, and trusto Reliability and dependabilityo Novel hardware platformsb) Development issues for SAHNS:o Development methodologies, models and toolso Analytical and validation modelso Performance evaluation and modeling (incl. simulation tools)c) Operation and management issues for SAHNS:o Topology control and managemento Energy control and managemento Resource and service discovery and controlo QoS provisioning and managemento Data management, data aggregation, data dissemination, andquery processingo Assuring survivability and reliabilityo Controls for privacy, security, and trust managementd) Application issues for SAHNS:o Best current and future applications for SAHNSo Experience with SAHNS deployments and productso Social and business impacts of SAHNS-based applications2. PAPER SUBMISSIONPapers must be submitted in the PDF format, with numbered pages. They should have no more than 6 pages following the IEEE ComputerSociety proceedings format (8.5 by 11 inch sheets, double-column, 10point or larger font, single-spaced).The following information must be provided on the first page:o Paper titleo Full names, affiliations and email addresses of all authorso An abstract (up to 150 words)o Five to ten keywords/phraseso A footnote with the indication of the corresponding author, plus the complete address, phone and fax numbers of thecorresponding authorPapers should be submitted by emailing them to:llilien
cs.wmich.eduEach received submission will be confirmed, usually within twoworkdays.3. PAPER REVIEW AND PUBLISHINGEach paper will be peer-reviewed by at least two reviewers and theircomments will be provided to the authors. If accepted, the paper will be published in the workshop proceedingsby the IEEE Computer Society Press, provided that at least one ofits authors registers for ICDCS (which includes SAHNS) by the earlyregistration deadline. As all conferences published by the IEEE Computer Society'sConference Publishing Services (CPS), ICDCS proceedings will beindexed through INSPEC, the leading English-language bibliographicinformation service for scientific and technical literature. ICDCSproceedings will also be submitted for indexing to EI's EngineeringInformation Index, Compendex, ISI Thomson's Scientific andTechnical Proceedings, ISTP/ISI Proceedings, and Current Contentson Diskette (ISI Thomson). We plan a special issue of an international journal with extendedversions of the selected SAHNS papers.4.
