The international scientific committee will review and score all abstracts anonymously. The abstracts should contain unpublished data at the time of the abstract deadline. A total of 82 free papers will be accepted and will be grouped in free paper sessions according to the topic of the abstract. The four free papers with the highest score will be selected for the "Best paper and video" session and will be nominated for the "Adriaan Van den Spiegel" free paper award.All free papers will have a speaking time of maximum 10 min (very strict!). After every paper 5 min of discussion time will be scheduled. Abstracts not selected for oral presentation might qualify for a digital poster presentation. When your abstract is accepted for a digital poster presentation you will be asked to submit 1 PowerPoint slide. The digital posters will be available for viewing during the whole congress on several digital poster boards. The abstract of the posters will be included in the abstract book.During the opening session of the congress the results of six prospective randomised trials or meta-analyses will be presented (level 1 Evidence). The data are either unpublished or may have been published after January 2010. The program committee will select the submissions accepted for presentation.Call for videosThe national scientific committee will review and score all videos submitted. A total of 27 free videos will be accepted and will be grouped in 3 videos sessions. The three videos with the highest score will be selected for the "Best paper and video" session and will be nominated for the "Adriaan Van den Spiegel" free video award.Video presentations should be shorter than 8 minutes, including slides (very strict!). After every video a Q&A discussion of 3 min will be scheduled. An abstract describing the video content has to be submitted on line and the video itself has to be send (on a DVD) to the congress secretariat via regular mail, before the deadline of January 15th 2011. Video submissions longer than 8 minutes will not be accepted.Call for artworksDuring the 33rd International Congress of the European Hernia Society an exhibition of "Art by Surgeons" will organized. Therefore we encourage participants to the congress to submit artworks made by themselves for this exhibition. Any mistakes in literature or in scientific facts will be published as what is typed.The scientific committee reserves the right to accept or refuse an abstract, to designate abstracts either oral or poster presentation and to choose a suitable session for the abstract. The authors' preference of the type of the presentation and theme will be taken into account.An acceptable structure of an abstract must consist of the following components.(1) Background: A statement of the hypothesis or research question.(2) Methods: An explanation of the study design and experimental methods used(3) Results: A concise summary of the major findings of the experiment or study. Sufficient data must be provided to permit evaluation by the reviewers and public reading the abstracts. Statements such as "the data will be discussed" are not acceptable. It is also only acceptable to insert 1 table or 1 figure.(4) Conclusion(s): Summary of the overall findings and the importance of the study.Abstract submission is possible as of 1 September 2010Abstract submission deadline: 15 January 2011
