3-D Surface Geometry and Reconstruction: Developing Concepts and ApplicationsEditors: Dr. Umesh C. PatiNational Institute of Technology, Rourkela, India Call for Chapters: Proposals Submission Deadline: June 8, 2010IntroductionThe methods used to digitize and reconstruct the shapes of complex 3-D objects have evolved rapidly due to attention from many industrial as well as research groups. Earlier, 3-D models were used primarily in robotics and computer vision applications. The models for such applications require only salient geometric features so that the objects can be recognized. However, more recently there has been considerable interest in the construction of 3-D models for applications where the focus is more on visualization by humans. 3-D reconstruction from images is common to several research domains and there have been a number of attempts to model the 3-D geometry of objects and scenes from images. These attempts provide a complete geometrical 3-D description from a sequence of 2-D images. The demand for constructing 3-D models has been steadily growing and it will continue to grow in the future due to its wide-ranging applications. Hence, there exists a need for an edited collection of research articles in this increasingly important area. Objective of the BookThis book will aim to provide relevant theoretical frameworks and the latest empirical research findings in this expanding field. It is important for the readers to understand this technology and its benefits. The book will be written for students, researchers, academics, professionals and industry practitioners working in the area of 3-D surface reconstruction who want to improve their understanding of the inter-related topics. The proposed publication will deal with the concepts, methodologies, applications and recent developments in this emerging field.Target AudienceThe target audience of this book will be composed of educators, students, practitioners, professionals and researchers working in the field of 3-D surface reconstruction in various disciplines, e.g. computer science, electrical engineering, electronics engineering, systems science and information technology. Moreover, the book will be a valuable and multifaceted resource that will provide insights about where the technology is going and will give a sample of some of the most interesting applications, critical issues as well as emerging trends. This publication will be invaluable to all those required to use theoretical analysis, algorithms and practical applications of 3-D surface reconstruction technologies. Finally, this book will be a welcome addition to academic, research, governmental and public administration libraries’ research collections.Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:Introductory chapters/OverviewImage acquisitionImage registrationImage integration3-D reconstruction of objects3-D reconstruction of scenes/environmentsApplications in industry, medicine, entertainment, geology etc.Submission ProcedureResearchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before June 8, 2010, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by June 23, 2010 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by August 8, 2010. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this project.PublisherThis book is scheduled to be published by IGI Global (formerly Idea Group Inc.), publisher of the “Information Science Reference” (formerly Idea Group Reference), “Medical Information Science Reference,” “Business Science Reference,” and “Engineering Science Reference” imprints.
