Post-Doctoral Research AssociateDepartment of Social Science & Policy StudiesWorcester Polytechnic InstitutePosition Description: Full time position available in educationaldata mining/science inquiry/motivation research, working withDr. Janice Gobert and Dr. Ryan Baker. Researcher will study how therelationship between student individual differences and learning ismediated by disengaged behaviors within the Science Assistmentsproject, an intelligent tutoring system for middle school students'inquiry in science. WPI currently provides and supports this systemfor middle schools in the Central Massachusetts area and is developingand implementing assessments for Physics, Chemistry, Biology andGeoscience.Information about the project team can be found athttp://users.wpi.edu/~sci_assistments
Principal duties and responsibilities:Conduct field observations of student disengagementUse educational data mining methods to develop detectors of disengagedbehaviorsProgrammatically analyze and distill log files of student internactionUtilize questionnaire measures of student individiual differencesAssist in other types of data collectioin and analysisAssist in developing project documents and papersAssist in developing and maintaining relationships with teachers andschool administratorsOther duties as assignedRequirements: A graduate degree in Learning Sciences, ComputerScience, Education, Science Education, Mathematics or related area,with research background in educational data mining, web usage miningor log analysis, motivation, and/or disengagementExcellent people skills are essential in order to interact withproject team consisting of software engineers, teachers, graduatestudents and school administratorsExcellent time management skillsAbility to work in Massachusetts schools* Initial length of appointment is 2 years.
