nottingham.edu.cnDescriptionNingbo, China - May 5 & 6, 2011 The Division of International Communications at the University of Nottingham Ningbo, China, will be hosting a 2-day conference on "China's Media in a Global Context" on May 5 and 6, 2011. Our objective is to solicit papers that encourage debate across the media - print, the electronic media, radio and television: That identifies and analyses current developments in China's media That examines the evolving relationship between media and state That locates these developments within a global, comparative context Abstracts are invited on the following topics: A. Rational Legal Authority and the Media in Party-led regimes. Weber's notion has proven a fruitful tool in the excavation of media-state relations, particularly in contexts featuring powerful party organisations. The conference is interested in the usefulness and relevance of rational legal authority and its applicability to China and other states. B. New Media, New Communities. China's innovation in new media has created numerous new communities across geographic, cultural and linguistic terrain and sparked fresh debate concerning the limits and consequences of various kinds of interventions. The conference is interested in debating these developments. C. Media Professionalization. The training, skills and perspectives of today's media professionals will have a powerful influence on the shape and direction of the media in China, and elsewhere. The conference will focus on issues of media professionalization, ethics and on the impact of these activities and developments. D. Advertising and the Media. One of the media's oldest relationships, but also one of its most problematic and complex, the conference is interested in advertising trends, income generation, payment gateways and in the ethical and other dimensions of advertising on the Chinese and other media. nottingham.edu.cn. Authors whose abstracts are accepted will be notified by the February 01 2011. Some of the papers will be selected for publication in a peer reviewed book of conference proceedings.
