    Introduction

Hundreds and thousands of people around the world rely on the Internet for various tasks related to their livelihoods. The research community has been devising new ideas, hoping to give coverage to a growing numbers of people around the globe. Distributed computing in particular is facilitating the growth and utilization of various internetworking technologies. However, the increasing scale, complexity, heterogeneity, and dynamism of communication networks, resources and applications have made distributed computing systems brittle, unmanageable and insecure. Self-managing or autonomic techniques are inspired by biological systems that deal with similar challenges of complexity, dynamism, heterogeneity, and uncertainty, and provide a holistic approach for the development of systems that can adapt themselves to meet requirements of performance, fault tolerance, reliability, security, and Quality of Service (QoS) without manual intervention. The primary objective of this book is to capture the state-of-the-art in design and development of Internet and distributed computing systems that leverage autonomic principles and techniques.

    Objective of the Book

This book will aim to provide relevant theoretical frameworks, practical experience and the latest research findings in the field of Internet and distributed computing systems.

    Target Audience

The target audience of this book will be composed of professionals and researchers working in the field of distributed computing and Internet technologies. It will be written for graduate students, researchers, academics, and industry practitioners working in the area of Internet and distributed computing who want to improve their understanding of the inter-related topics. Moreover, the book will include some chapters written in tutorial style so that the general readers can be able to easily grasp some of the ideas in this area.

Recommended topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

    - Advances in Internet architectures and protocols

    - Content delivery networks using storage clouds

    - Experiences and case studies with grid/cloud systems and applications

    - Content and service distribution in cloud computing infrastructures

    - Self-managing grid systems

    - Prototypes, tools, and middleware for autonomous distributed systems

    - Energy efficient autonomic systems

    - Adaptive pricing models for Internet-based systems

    - SLA negotiation

    - Dynamic resource provisioning

    - Dependability in interconnection networks and collaborative systems

    - Context-awareness in network-based applications (VoIP, streaming)

    - Network management and traffic engineering

    - Security in communication networks

    - Virtualized environments

    - Plug-and-play configuration of sensor networks

    - Sensor network data management

    - Wireless networks in smart environments

    Submission Procedure

Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before November 25, 2010, a 2-3 page chapter proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of his or her proposed chapter. Submissions should be made electronically at the EasyChair submission system: http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=idca11. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by December 10, 2011 about the status of their proposals and sent full chapter submission guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by March 20, 2011. All submitted chapters will be reviewed on a double-blind review basis. Contributors may also be requested to serve as reviewers for this book project (www.cloudbus.org/cdn/IGI-book).
