    DOMESTIC USE OF ENERGY

    Objectives

DUE focuses on promoting sustainable development particularly in Southern African countries through the more effective use of energy. South Africa and the rest of Africa face many challenges in the wider use and provision of household energy. Issues addressed include sustainable energy provision; implementation of the Kyoto protocol by clean development mechanisms (CDMs); environmental legislation; the role of renewables; off-grid electricity supply and subsidised tariffs. These challenges are particularly marked in the rural areas of developing countries, although delegates from all over the world have benefited from attending and contributing to this annual event in the tourism capital of South Africa.
