Reinforcing the Value of Quality Citizenship

February 20-22, 2011

Introduction to the Annual Student Conference:

Each spring the University of Nizwa holds an annual student conference to encourage critical thinking and stimulate engaging conversations among the student body. The First Annual Student Conference was titled “Student Activities in Higher Educational Institutions,” and examined the significance of participation in student activities to a satisfying experience at university and toward the development of a robust and collegial student community. The Second Annual Student Conference treated “Student Creativity,” and explored ways in which a university may inspire and stimulate student creativity, both in traditional courses, and in the realm of the student activities. In February of 2011, the Third Annual Student Conference will center on the topic of “Reinforcing the Value of Quality Citizenship,” and discuss the continuous effort and cooperation necessary for developing and advancing a culture of strong and prosperous society.

Vision:

Reinforcing the value of quality citizenship is a contemporary topic of significance in open societies like Oman. The importance of discussing this subject underlines the significance of striving towards realizing the basic goal of the University as expressed in the Mission Statement: “The University of Nizwa shall promote positive thinking and preserve the nations’ Islamic and cultural heritage and identity, faith in Allah and loyalty to the country and to his Majesty.” The annual student conference is an activity that promotes positive thinking and reinforces the University’s sense of direction, enriching students’ experience with the insights of researchers, academics and students; moreover, it offers a forum for students to learn about organizing and participating in conferences, and to reinforce their researching capabilities by presenting and discussing their opinions and findings.

Objectives:

? Highlight the role of various social establishments in promoting and reinforcing the value of quality citizenship.

? Examine the participants’ studies in promoting citizenship values, and apply them locally.

? Work toward building and developing a realistic vision for contribution in preparing a generation capable of representing patriotic values and practicing them.

? Student participation via the presentation of research papers, critical thinking and discussion, and the management and organization of conference events.

? The concepts of citizenship

? Globalization and its impact on the value of quality citizenship

? The role of institutions in promoting value of quality citizenship

? Citizenship and legislation

? Towards active citizenship

? Other related topics

Papers are invited under the following terms:

? Papers must fulfill research standards of high quality and originality (published earlier)

? Papers must be within the scope and objectives of the conference

? Papers should be at least 15 pages in length (with font size 14 / margin 2.5 cm)

? Participants must fill the attached form of participation and send it by November 30, 2010, along with brief C.V.

? Papers must be submitted by December 25, 2010
