    NATIONAL RESEARCH COUNCIL CANADA

CASCON 2011 is the 21st Annual International Conference hosted by the Centre for Advanced Studies Research, IBM Canada Software Laboratory. This “Meeting of Minds” provides an exciting forum for exchanging ideas and experiences in the ever-expanding and critical fields of software engineering and computing. The CASCON 2011 program will include keynote presentations; technical papers; position papers; workshops; and a

technology showcase. The technical papers program will feature experience reports and original research papers. The technology showcase will feature poster presentations and demonstrations on research in progress. As such, CASCON 2011 will be an excellent venue for presenting original work, exchanging new ideas, sharing results and experiences, and networking with over 1300 researchers and practitioners from academia, industry, and government.

    Important Dates:

Monday May 23, 2011: Abstracts for technical papers due

Monday June 6, 2011: Full technical papers due

Monday July 25, 2011: Acceptance notification to technical paper authors

Wednesday August 24, 2011: Camera-ready technical papers due

Monday November 7 - Thursday November 10, 2011: Conference dates

    Research Topics:

We envision that the grand challenge for computing and for software engineering will be that of scaling up three pivotal technology areas, namely: Instrumentation, Interconnectivity and Intelligence. As the degree of integration across systems and users increases, we foresee challenges around the amount of data we will be managing and analyzing, the computational platforms on which software will be developed and run, the tools that will be supporting software development and the business models that will evolve around this new breed of software systems and data. We also foresee challenges in making software systems smarter over time by learning from both the users’ and the systems’ historical data, in order to predict and adapt.

CASCON 2011 invites authors to submit original papers addressing these challenges, including but not limited to the following topics:

Cloud Computing: cloud platforms and frameworks; autonomic management; adaptive systems; virtualization

Intelligence and Analytics: predictive modeling and analytics; data warehouses; OLAP; data mining; data visualization; intelligent search; data integration

Software Development Processes and Tools: compilers; collaborative integrated development environments; quality assurance, testing and model checking; service-oriented programming models; distributed and parallel computation models; collaboration and awareness; development methods; metrics; agile methods; open-source and global software development; end-user software development; software design; software comprehension; web application architecture.

Next Generation Systems: multi-core systems; stream processing systems; graphical processing systems

Information Management: Database infrastructure and technology; stream data; XML and text data; query processing and optimization; data mining.

Smart Systems: web-based systems; communities of practice; scripting languages; privacy and trust; mobile web; semantic web; new collaboration environments and technologies; cognitive support for smarter interactions; interaction patterns; end user programming; data relationship discovery; data visualization, HCI, context, personal agents.

Software as a Service : new computation and business models; large-scale system integration; legal, economic and societal issues.

Dynamic Business Processes: RESTful services; Smart services, BPM, SOA

    Best Paper Awards:

Two paper awards ? for Best Paper and Best Student Paper - will be presented to recognize the best technical contributions of the event in terms of originality, clarity and potential impact. To be eligible for the "Best Student Paper" award, a paper must have been primarily authored by a student and the work that the paper reports must have been undertaken by the student authors. Only the student author(s) of the Best Student Paper award receive a prize. The recipients must have been students at the time the work was undertaken.

    Paper Submission Instructions:

The deadline for paper submissions is Monday June 6, 2011. However, please submit an abstract by Monday May 23, 2011 to assist us with planning. To submit a paper, follow the instructions at the conference web site at www.cas.ibm.com/cascon

The paper submission web site will open on Monday March 21, 2011. Technical papers should be, at most, 15 pages long, using 10pt font, in 2 columns. Detailed style descriptions, as well as templates are available at the submission web site. CASCON 2011 will NOT accept submissions that have been previously published, are in press or have been submitted elsewhere. The proceedings from CASCON 2011 will be published by IBM and included in the ACM Digital Library.

    Workshop, Poster, and Demonstration Submission:

Separate Calls for Workshop and Technical Showcase submissions will be sent out to those subscribed to the CASCON email notification list. To subscribe, register your email address at: https://www.ibm.com/ibm/cas/cascon_main/subscribe.shtml

Please help us publicize CASCON 2011 by linking to the conference web site www.cas.ibm.com/cascon from your own Web site and by bringing this announcement to the attention of your colleagues.

We look forward to receiving your submissions and meeting you at CASCON

    in November!
