    Journal Name:mBio (ISSN: 2150-7511)

Published By: American Society for Microbiology

    Website: mbio.asm.org/

    Print ISSN: 2150-7511 2150 7511

    Aims & Scope:
As ASM’s first broad-scope, online-only, open-access journal, mBio offers rapid review and publication of the best research in microbiology and allied fields. The new journal continues ASM’s nonprofit publishing mission and is edited by scientists involved in active research. Please visit the Board of Editors page for a list of mBio editors.

The scope of mBio reflects the enormity of the microbial world, a highly interconnected biosphere where microbes interact with living and nonliving matter to produce outcomes that range from symbiosis to pathogenesis, energy acquisition and conversion, climate change, geologic change, food and drug production, and even animal behavioral change. If your work is within the field of microbiology and you feel that it is top science, then mBio welcomes your submission.

mBio is published in association with the American Academy of Microbiology. AAM Fellows work with Editor in Chief Arturo Casadevall by serving as editors and reviewers for manuscripts submitted in their areas of expertise. AAM Fellows also are entitled to submit one paper per calendar year via a special, accelerated submission path. This path requires Fellows to obtain two reviews prior to submission (from reviewers who are not recent collaborators, trainees, etc.), make any necessary modifications in response to the reviewers' comments, and communicate the paper plus reviewer feedback and author responses to mBio. After the manuscript is received by the journal, it is assigned to a member of the Board of Editors for disposition. The assigned mBio editor has the prerogative of deciding whether or not the submitted reviews should be considered. Although we anticipate that most manuscripts submitted by Fellows will be approved, editors have the option of recommending modification, additional external review, or rejection. Please review the for fellows page for information on how to submit an AAM Contribution.

mBio offers streamlined decisions. Our intent is for authors to receive decisions on their manuscripts more quickly and more transparently. mBio editors will either accept or reject manuscripts and will request only minor revisions; editors generally will not require authors to make extensive modifications or perform additional experiments. mBio’s streamlined decisions do not mean less rigorous peer review, however. mBio editors, invited editors, and external referees are all active working scientists who are in the best position to judge the quality and importance of the work.

The philosophy behind this decision is a desire to break away from the current publication model where authors are often uncertain of whether their work will ultimately be acceptable once additional work is completed. We believe that having clear decisions will improve the publishing experience for authors.

Authors of a manuscript rejected by mBio who choose to do additional experiments will have the option of resubmitting the paper to mBio or another ASM journal one additional time. The resubmission must be accompanied by a response to the prior decision letter. A rejection from mBio does not disqualify a manuscript from subsequent submission to another ASM journal.

Please review the for authors page for a comprehensive list of article types that mBio will consider for publication.
